55 New Things

There was a challenge or idea going around last year about documenting the new things that one encountered or did in a year from one birthday to the next. The idea was to list the number of new things represented by the birthday at the start of that year. As I turned 55 in 2008 I decided to collect these 55 new things and document them in a mini-album. I used the new Kit of the Month from Creating Keepsakes as when I saw it I knew it would make a perfect start to creating the album. I added the front and back covers (Teresa Collins) and many items from my "stash" that I had purchased and never used or used less than I should. There are a lot of Tim Holtz and Heidi Swapp embellishments and lots of alcohol inks and crackle paints from Ranger as well as Glimmer Mist and Glimmer Glass from Tattered Angels and probably other stuff too. I'm going to try to get these in order front to back! The actual list of "new things" was cut into strips and placed in the various envelopes throughout the book. Since I took the pictures I also added ribbon to the rings.

I haven't added anything lately but here are 3 I did recently: pictures from 3 concerts we went to in 2008 (Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Elton John); a fishing trip my husband took where he also did food photography at the lodge; the spring concert of the Greater Moncton Chorale, a community choir I am in.

Here are a few random pictures of my album from last year's CE. I was in 2 groups of 2-page layouts and 1 group of 1-page layouts and I only made 1 extra page for my album. Of course I didn't have all the pages as there were many groups. Each group was a group of 10 same as this year. I just took some random pictures to show the variety of the pages, how they all went together and how the pictures fit with them. I hope this helps anyone trying to decide on whether to join up or having concerns about their pages. Some were quite elaborate and some really simple and they were all great and all went together because of the colour selections.

Also the album was sold at Scrap Happy Sisters and I bought it on the shopping tour. It consisted of two chipboard covers, the letters and some page protectors and I bought more page protectors. The cover paper and some of the stickers and die cuts I used in my album were from a package made especially for CE and sold there.

One layout and an envelope book

This is a layout I did for the Europe album the other day. I couldn't seem to get a good picture of it no matter what setting I tried. The other two pictures are an envelope book I did for the BPS book making class.

The intent of this little envelope book is to use it to collect emphemera which will be placed in the Book of Days I made before.

Here are some things I have been working on in classes from Big Picture Scrapbooking. The first are two Japanese Stab Binding books I made in January. The one with the {a} I made for a swap for a Yahoo group. In February, the class was to make an art journal using pamphlet stitching and I finished the base of mine today. ( Book of Days) I'll be filling it in over a year, starting in March.

Our first port of call

Our first port was Villefranche in the south of France. While there we took a short train ride to Nice. Villefranche is a pretty town and I think had we spent the day differently and just looked around there it might have been nicer in a way. As it was, we spent quite a bit of time buying train tickets and waiting for the train and it was very hot, so when we got back from Nice we just went back to the ship early. Anyway, here are the first few layouts from this chapter.

I finally finished up the pictures from Barcelona and now can embark on the cruise ship! Here are layouts on Parc Guell ("park goo-ay") an amazing park area designed by Antoni Gaudi, which was up quite a steep hill. After climbing in the heat we had to rest awhile before exploring further. Also pictures of us outside a 17th century building which houses the Maritime Museum and of the Columbus column.

The first two are pictures from Casa Mila (also known as La Perdrera) the Gaudi-designed apartment building. The other four are of Sagrada Familia, also designed by Gaudi and still under construction. Gaudi died before it was completed (back in 1920s).

Patterned paper is mostly Daisyd's but the Bikes and Graffiti ones are BasicGrey Obscure. I knew as soon as I saw Obscure that I wanted to use it for the graffiti pictures.

Mediterranean Cruise Album

I have an awful lot of pictures for this! So I decided to divide it into chapters and set up each chapter in much the same way. I will also try to use a particular product line for each chapter. That would seem to make life simpler and also get me to use up some of my accumulated kits! I did the whole first chapter last night, but it was a short one, just "getting there". I used the Toby line from Love Elsie as the colours and theme seemed just right for this part of the trip. I also am planning on using the second page of each chapter as my main journalling page, so I don't have to do a lot on each of the other pages. I am copying more or less straight from my travel journal, hand written on lined paper. Here are the pages in the order they will appear in the album.

In order: some symbols of the season in front of Moncton City Hall (with snow), march in protest of Climate Change and Global Warming (somewhat ironic considering the cold weather that day), early December pictures down at the cottage and nearby wharf.

Product Playground Class Week 1

I recently signed up for a class on the Big Picture Scrapbooking website called Product Playground. The teacher ( Lisa Damrosch) aims to have us use up some of the big pile of scrapbooking products we just HAD to buy. Each week there is a different group of products and she gives us ideas and instructions but we make whatever layout we want and then post it in their gallery for all to see. I thought I'd post mine here too so others can see them. So here's mine from Week 1. The product group was bookplates/label holders. It's about a fishing trip my husband took at the very start of this year's fishing season.

New York City

Here are three layouts I did this week of pictures from our recent trip to New York City. Still lots to go! You can click on the pictures for a bit bigger view.

The first is the Magnolia (currently Magno ia) Bakery. I have to learn to make sure I have all the letters before deciding on lettering!Journalling reads: One of the places that Alix wanted to visit in New York was the Magnolia Bakery. What we had to do, she said, was to buy cupcakes and eat them in the little park across the street. She had seen this on a TV show, "Sex and the City". On our second day on the double-decker bus, we got off in Greenwich Village and walked down Bleeker Street to the bakery, bought our cupcakes, which were indeed delicious, and enjoyed them in the park. The pigeons appreciated our crumbs too!. We liked our time in Greenwich Village. Paper is Bazzill and 3Bugs in a Rug from a ScrapRoom kit, Chipboard letters Heidi Swapp.

The second reads: Monday March 6 We decided to take the free Staten Island Ferry over to the island and back. We got a great view of the statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the bridges, and the Manhatten skymine. It was well worth the hour it took for the return trip. Paper is Wild Asparagus, letter stickers SEI and rub-ons American Crafts.

The third reads: My first thought, when we visited the site formerly filled by the World Trade Center on March 5, 2006, was that there wasn't a lot to see. Other than the ironwork cross (left as a memorial to the hundreds who had died when terrorists flew passenger jets into the two WTC towers on Sept. 11, 2001) the area could have been any construction site. When I looked at the pictures, though, I began to think that this was a good thing...that the bareness of the area was itself a tribute to the many people who had worked so hard to clean it up, to recover the bodies of those who had died, to dig out the debris,to fill the gaping wound in the city. Almost five years after the event, the memory of 9/11 is still sharp, filled with horror and sadness. It was valuable to pay a visit to this site, even though, on the surface, there wasn't a lot to see. Paper, diecut letter and letter stickers all Basic Grey.

After doing so much the first part of the year I seem to be in a slump! Last week I just did 2 1-page layouts and this week so far only 2 2-page layouts. I have been doing a lot of picture printing and planning though if that counts! Here is one of my layouts from this week, all about a party my daughter had for her and her two friends , all with 16th birthdays in January. In the picture with the cake, my daughter Alix is the one in the pinky-red dress and beige sweater, Danielle is the other dark-haired girl and Lindsay is the blond girl. All materials Club Scrap. Journalling reads: Saturday, February 4, 2006 What a great group of friends, all gathered to celebratethe 16th birthdays of Alix, Danielle and Lindsay, whose birthdays all fell within about 3 weeks of each other. The girls got together and made invitations and planned the party to be held at our house. Nicole was here for the weekend and, together with Mom, kept the food and punch coming from the kitchen. Guitars and the piano were played, sometimes at the same time as CDs! A noisy, happy, fun time!

been a while...

I've been scrapping a bit but not posting, during the Olympics. This is what I have done:
Week of Feb. 5-11 (20 pages/11 layouts)
Week of Feb 12-18 (10 pages/5 layouts)
Week of Feb 19-25 (8 pages/5 layouts PLUS an album I made from a 2 photo/page photo album - more on this later)
This week so far only 1 page, but that might just be it as I am off on Friday to New York City, where I will no doubt acquire many more photos to scrap, as if I didn't have enough to begin with!

Total so far for this year (Jan/Feb) 131 pages, making up 72 layouts plus a mini-album as shown here.

As for the photo album: this is based on an idea from Stacy Julian in Simple Scrapbooks magazine. The idea is to take a photo album and insert your 4x6 pictures and then in some of the slots insert 4x6 journalling blocks instead, thus
making a "scrapbook" out of it. Works great and I did this with the multitude of pictures I had from my daughter's highschool musical that were "left over" after I made the "normal" pages for the album. There is still room in the album for anything else she might do drama-wise this year and I liked it so much that I decided to do one for last year's 2 productions and get 2 more albums for her final 2 years of highschool. Of course I now had to print more pictures from last year but I think it will turn out great. Here are a couple of examples of the pages so you can see what I mean. The scans are a bit crooked, but you get the idea anyway. The musical was "Little Shop of Horrors". I used SEI Hippie Chick as well as 3 colors of Bazzill for the inserts. It all went very quickly and was done in one day.

As for the other pages I did, I don't have time to scan them right now, but I'll post some more another time

Last week's scrapbooking

I didn't get quite as much done last week as in the first few weeks of 2006, but still my 12 pages (7 layouts) are still above my goal of 5 layouts per week, so I'm happy. The ones I chose to show are not complex layouts, but I have special reasons for choosing them. The airport one shows how close the LasVegas airport is to town and what nifty pictures you can get of the hotels while awaiting your flight. Also, the new book by Erin Lincoln (Supply Savvy Scrapbooking) inspired me to pull out some sheets of paper from one of my old SEI Simple Sets and use them here, and I think the stripes give a certain sense of movement to the layout which goes along with the theme of flight. So have a look through your old paper stash - you never know what you might be able to use! (all materials SEI except the larger letters are Heidi Swapp chipboard letters)

The second layout is of the white lions at the Mirage Hotel. I wanted you to see these magnificent animals. The lions (and the white tigers and other cats) do not actually live in these enclosures, but have much larger areas, I believe on the estate of Siegried and Roy. Different animals come "to work" each day. The first time I visited there was a lion and a lioness in the large enclosure, basking in the sun on the rocks. The next day two male lions were there and another one was in a different enclosure, where a tiger had been the day before. The names of the different animals are posted each day. I have pictures of the white tigers also, including two young ones who were wrestling and playing like my cats used to do when they were kittens (only way bigger!) but I thought I'd show you the lions. (Cardstock is Bazzill, chipboard letter BasicGrey, patterned paper is Diane's Daughters, rub-on letters are Making Memories)

On a roll in January!

I have really been "on a roll" as far as scrapbooking goes! So far as of January 28, I have completed 43 layouts ( 80 pages total) , mainly 2-page spreads, some 1-page. This week alone I have done 31 pages, as I really got going on my pictures from a trip my husband and I took to Las Vegas in October. It was hard to pick a couple to post, but here goes:

The first one contains pictures from the concert that my choir (The Greater MonctonChorale ) put on in November. The journaling reads:November 29, 30 and Dec, 1, 2005. The Greater Moncton Chorale had the wonderful priviledge of performing the Messiah with the NB Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Howard Dyck. It was a lot of work and extra practices with the conductor, orchestra and soloists were needed. But what fun to do three performances in Fredericton, Moncton and Saint John! The larger photo was taken for the newspaper and Marcel took the others at our concert at Central United Church, Moncton, Nov. 30.

Papers are mainly Club Scrap. Quickutz die cuts for title.

The second layout is of the Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. It is a wonderful spot to watch the dolphins interact with their keepers. They do not put on shows, but the trainers interact with them and show off their natural behaviours. I watched the two juvenile dolphins (5 year old Huffenpuff and her 2 1/2 year old brother Maverick) interacting with the trainers one day and the next day, my husband came with me to see them and we caught the 2 adult females in their session. The other part of the exhibit at the Mirage is the Secret Garden where they have white tigers and lions as well as other cats, all part of the group owned by Sigfried and Roy, who used to perform there. I haven't done the layouts of these yet, but maybe I'll post these later as I have some very nice pictures of the cats.

2nd and 3rd week

I did 9 layouts in the second week of January (15 pages total) but didn't get around to posting any, mainly because my scanner was acting up Monday when I tried to do them. Since then, I have completed 4 more layouts (7 pages) and hope to do a few more this week. By request (thanks Clare) here are two I did of the Rolling Stones outdoor concert which was here in Moncton in September. By all measurements, this was the biggest musical event we have ever had here.

The journalling for the first reads: September 3, 2005 Wow! What an amazing day! The weather smiled on the approximately 85, 000 people gathered at Magnetic Hill, Moncton. It was a perfect late summer day, sunny, not too hot, just right for a crowd eager to finish off summer with a great concert featuring the Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones! Here! In Moncton! Marcel and I took the bus with Alix and her friends. At that time I didn't have a camera with me, but bought disposible ones on site. Renee and her friends met up with us later. All through the afternoon the crowds grew as the band (Les Trois Accords, Maroon 5, Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip) played. As the sun setk it was time to get ready for the Stones. What a day!

On the second, it reads: Marcel and I made our concert-watching base about midway back in the crowd, but both Alix and Renee, with their friends, got right up close to the stage and had a great view of the Stones. Renee took these great pictures of Mick Jagger as he strutted his stuff on the big stage, along with the whole band moving out into the crowd on a moving stage section. We had a good view too on the giant screens.

Layouts for week one of 2006

I did 10 scrapbook layouts this week, including 9 double-page ones and 1 single, Mainly various ones from 2005 in general and from a trip that my husband and one daughter made out to Alberta to visit another daughter who was working there for the summer. The double page layout here includes pictures from our trip up Sulphur Mountain near Banff. The labeled picture is obviously the one they took of us as we were about to make our descent. There were beautiful views of the town and the Banff Springs Hotel. I chose this one to show because I liked the way I featured some pictures using circles, because of the paper, monogram letters and letter stickers (Basic Grey) and because I felt I was able to show the view as well as the outside and inside of the gondola, and the way my husband and one daughter felt about going in it (not so great).

The single page layout is just a quick one showing our new flat screen TV and all the things that were required for us to be able to install it including the 6 (!) remotes, 2 of which I'm still not sure the purpose of. I liked this one because of the way I used the circles in the paper to frame some of the pictures and also some of the other circles to highlight the "sixes". Also I was able to use a small picture of the hole in the wall allowing access to a lot of wires as a journaling box by using a vellum-writer pen to write on the photo. Paper is Junkitz and the epoxy numbers are Creative Imaginations.

I should add that the double one is based on a sketch from Becky Higgins' 2nd sketch book. Giving credit where it's due!

Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is a great hobby with so many facets to it: preserving family history, creating interesting pages, making new friends that have the same interests. In this blog I will be eventually posting some of the pages I create.
